If there’s one thing Nikki knows best, it’s how to turn cat antics into art. As the illustrator behind secondfloorneko, she blends bold colours, expressive line work, and a heavy dose of humour to capture the silly, lovable essence of cats. Whether it’s a perfectly timed pun or a feline twist on a classic masterpiece, her work is all about finding joy in everyday moments.

Can you tell us more about you and what you do?
Nikki. I am the person behind secondfloorneko. I’m an illustrator who draws cute cats and creates merchandise inspired by cat puns and their adorable behaviours.
Every artwork tells a story. What inspired your cover design, what narrative or message are you conveying through your cover design, and can you share the creative process that led to its final form?
This cover is inspired by the artwork Girl with a Pearl Earring. I thought it would be fun to add my own twist by transforming the lady into a cat!
How does creativity connect to self-expression for you?
Jokes and puns have always been my way of expressing myself, and cats are the cutest and most natural way for me to bring that to life.
How do you define your individuality as an artist, and in what ways does this uniqueness manifest in your creations?
I love finding humour in everyday moments and turning them into art. My work stands out through bold, colourful visuals and simple yet expressive line work, bringing cat puns and their silly behaviours to life in a fun and playful way.
In your perspective, what role does creativity play in empowering individuals and communities, and how have you witnessed this power in action?
Creativity brings people together, sparks joy, and makes ideas more accessible. I’ve seen how playful art—especially cat puns and humour—can brighten someone’s day, start conversations, and even create a sense of community among people who share the same love for cats and laughter. It also opens the door for wonderful collaborations, where different creative minds come together to make something even more special.
Have you faced any challenges in maintaining your individuality in your work, especially in the face of trends or external expectations? How did you overcome them?
Trends come and go, and it’s easy to feel like you need to follow them to stay relevant. But I’ve learned that my best work comes from staying true to what I enjoy—playing with humour, cat puns, and bold, expressive art. Sometimes, I experiment with trends in a way that still feels like ‘me,’ but I never force it. At the end of the day, people connect with authenticity, and that’s what keeps my work unique.
What advice would you give to emerging artists who are trying to find and express their individuality through their work?
Don’t overthink it—just create what makes you happy. Your individuality will come naturally when you focus on what you genuinely enjoy, rather than what you think you should be making. Don’t be afraid to explore different art styles and mediums—you don’t have to lock yourself into one thing, especially in the beginning. Experiment, have fun, and let your personality shine through your work. The right audience will find you when you stay true to yourself.
What’s the one thing you want to accomplish this year?
One big goal I have is to hold my own solo exhibition—but not this year. Right now, I’m focusing on growing my work and building towards it at a slower, more intentional pace. I want to enjoy the process rather than rush it, so when the time comes, the exhibition truly represents me and my journey as an artist.
