Jessie Wong turns the completely ordinary parts of daily life into illustrations that feel like quiet little daydreams. In our interview, she talks about where her whimsical ideas come from, how noticing the small stuff changes the way we see the world, and why true magic is usually hiding right in plain sight.
Can you tell us more about you and what you do?
Hi! I'm an illustrator from Hong Kong. I love combining whimsical imagination with little moments from everyday life. Through my work, I hope to encourage people to notice the quiet beauty hidden in ordinary moments and turn them into something magical and memorable.
Every artwork tells a story. What inspired your cover design, what narrative or message are you conveying through your cover design, and can you share the creative process that led to its final form?
My cover design was inspired by dogs happily running through a park, picking flowers and playing together. While creating it, I kept thinking about my own dog that I used to have and the walks we shared. she was always so curious, stopping to sniff every flower along the way. Those little memories became the heart of this illustration, celebrating the simple joy of being present and appreciating the world around us.
How does creativity connect to self-expression for you?
I think creativity allows me to hold on to a part of my childhood. That sense of innocence, curiosity, and simple happiness is still the purest source of inspiration for my work today.
How do you define your individuality as an artist, and in what ways does this uniqueness manifest in your creations?
I like to think my illustrations have the ability to make people smile. They still make me smile too. If there's one thing I hope people take away from my work, it's the chance to notice the little things we often overlook and rediscover the happiness they quietly bring into our everyday lives.
In your perspective, what role does creativity play in empowering individuals and communities, and how have you witnessed this power in action?
To me, creativity has the power to transport us into another world, a place without limits, full of endless possibilities. It's a space where everyone is free to express themselves, imagine without boundaries, and create something that's uniquely their own.
Have you faced any challenges in maintaining your individuality in your work, especially in the face of trends or external expectations? How did you overcome them?
Definitely. With technology developing so quickly, there are more expectations than ever, from constantly creating new work to keeping up with the demand for short-form content on social media. It made me realize that I need to keep learning and growing. What started as simply loving to draw has become a journey of finding a healthy balance between my own creativity and the fast-changing world around me. At first, I resisted those changes, but now I'm learning to embrace them in a way that feels comfortable and true to myself.
What advice would you give to emerging artists who are trying to find and express their individuality through their work?
If you ever find yourself questioning whether your work has its own identity, go back to creating with your most genuine heart. When you truly love what you've made, you'll stop feeling lost. Your individuality will naturally shine through.
What’s the one thing you want to accomplish this year?
This year, I held my very first solo exhibition. It was one of the biggest goals I wanted to achieve, and I'm so grateful and happy that I was able to make it happen.
