We caught up with Alyssa Babasa, the illustrator and art director also known as Babsilog, whose work often tiptoes between growing up and staying young forever. Based in Quezon City with her two cats, Bada and Sampaguita, Alyssa’s art explores the spaces we call home—both physical and emotional. Her cover, On Tuesdays, seniors can watch for free, is a charming tribute to weekday cinema-goers: sleepy seniors, rowdy teens, and tender couples, with a few familiar film characters hiding in the crowd. It’s nostalgia, with popcorn.

Can you tell us more about you and what you do?

An illustrator and art director from Quezon City. I also like to explore the spaces we inhabit and questions what constitutes a home. My more personal work oscillates between the desire to grow up and to stay young. I live with my two cats Bada and Sampaguita.

Every artwork tells a story. What inspired your cover design, what narrative or message are you conveying through your cover design, and can you share the creative process that led to its final form?

My illustrated cover is inspired by the eccentric personalties that I encounter at weekday cinema screenings—the sleepy seniors, the chaotic high schoolers, and the lovers. I also included a few characters influenced by some of my favorite films growing up.

How does creativity connect to self-expression for you?

Over the years, I’ve come to better understand my identity and evolving beliefs through drawing.

How do you define your individuality as an artist, and in what ways does this uniqueness manifest in your creations?

My individuality extends to the narratives and recurring characters that appear in my work. These elements often reflect my personal experiences as a woman, as well as the mess and beauty of life in Manila.

In your perspective, what role does creativity play in empowering individuals and communities, and how have you witnessed this power in action?

In your perspective, what role does creativity play in empowering individuals and communities, and how have you witnessed this power in action?Art affects community because community-building is one of the most important aspects of making art. The art itself is only as impactful and meaningful with the community that you share, build, and connect with. Art thrives in communities that prioritize local talents and the marginalized. These communities foster safe spaces and help you find institutional and financial support.

Have you faced any challenges in maintaining your individuality in your work, especially in the face of trends or external expectations? How did you overcome them?

I believe my individuality as an artist is fluid and constantly evolving. The trends and expectations can get overwhelming but I find that a good walk can ground me almost immediately back in. Exploring beyond my primary medium also helps.

What advice would you give to emerging artists who are trying to find and express their individuality through their work?

Lean into what you’re genuinely into because they have a way of consistently showing up in your work. Keep reading, watch films that move you, and eat well.

What’s the one thing you want to accomplish this year?

I'd like to contribute to the TNVR community in Manila more actively through my art.

Where can we see more of your work?

I currently have an ongoing show at Siesta Horchata in Quezon City and am a member of Ilustrador ng Kabataan. You can also find me on Instagram (@babsilog_).
