What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is both a practice and a state of mind.
Mindfulness as practice, deals with our ability to remain aware of what we do. Mindfulness as state of mind, concerns with our self-awareness of our thoughts. Let’s dive in a little deeper into mindfulness, shall we?
Mindfulness is a practice which can welcome harmony. The practice of mindfulness helps us become more aware of our actions and surroundings. By being more aware of our actions and surroundings, we enable ourselves to live in harmony with our immediate environments. Since we are conscious of how best to operate within any given environment, harmony will come naturally to us.
Mindfulness, on the other hand, is a state of mind which can help us keep in touch with ourselves. A state of mindfulness governs our ability to remain connected with our thoughts, without judgement. Being more aware of what we think allows us to truly see what is on our minds instead of ignoring it. Since we can more accurately observe what is present in our thoughts, we are more in tune with our thoughts as they are and not what we think they may be.

Mindfulness keeps us calm. Practicing mindfulness keeps us aware of how to effectively operate in any given environment, thus reducing mental stress. Being mindful keeps us in check with ourselves, thus eliminating a need for endless speculation of one’s mental state that progresses without resolution. Allowing oneself to be mindful of the external and the internal, keeps us in harmony and at peace.
Mindfulness keeps us aware of our surroundings. The practice of mindfulness opens up our attention to all our available senses, thus giving a better opportunity to understand that which is pleasant for us and that which may harm us. Being mindful helps us be aware of our internal surroundings, alerting us to any kind of extreme fluctuations of thoughts and emotions. Being mindful allows us to see what we may take for granted, both on the inside and the outside.

DAILY PRACTICE 1
Practice mindfulness by noticing the little details of your immediate environment and recreate it through the medium of drawing. Through the act of drawing, we become more conscious of the unique beauty of the elements that inform our immediate surroundings. Being observant is key to accurately appreciating what is already there before you.

DAILY PRACTICE 2
Sometimes, our state of mind can be materialised physically by showing itself in the state of our homes/private spaces. Take time to survey your immediate environment, and get reacquainted with what should and should not be there. Assemble your list of tasks, and work at the reinvention of your space with diligence. A clean space is representative of a clear mind.

DAILY PRACTICE 3
Cooking can be particularly relaxing due to the time it takes to prep, cook, enjoy, and clean. All these actions require an attention of their own, thus providing us an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and our immediate environments through each step. You may just gain an appreciation for your own handiwork and the culinary arts of others along the way!
